Fabric Headband Tutorial

Since we have had so many questions about how we make our fabric headbands, we thought we would show everyone how to make there own with this tutorial. These cute fabric headbands can be made a ton of different ways and with a ton of different fabric options. Be as simple or as creative as you want, the possibilites are really endless!

First off, What you need:

Fabric - you don't need much, about 1/8th yard of each. I like to use two different kinds, one for the top and one for the bottom (lining), but you can use the same if you like. Almost any fabric will do, I prefer using a heavier fabric for the top such as felt, canvas, twill etc for a more structured finish and it is easier to embroider without using a hoop. Linen, Cotton, Flannel all work too. I have not tried a stretch fabric (a knit or a fleece), so I don't know how that will work.

Elastic - again, you don't need much, I use a strip cut to 5.5" long, but you can make it as big or small as you like by adjusting this length. I love to use FOE (fold over elastic) because it looks much nicer then regular elastic and it is really soft on little one's heads and fine hair. You can also find some great elastic trims meant for lingerie that look really nice as well.

Embellishments - I like to use small/med buttons, felt flowers/shapes, embroidery thread and needle, beads etc. anything goes as long as it is not too thick (or it will make turning the headband inside out a little tricky)

all the sewing stuff as usual - thread, scissors, sewing machine etc.

How To

Cut out the headband pattern from your fabric, 1 in the top fabric and 1 in your lining. You can use the pdf template here

Layout your buttons/beads/felt shapes the way you want them look, making sure to leave about 1/2" of fabric along the edges for sewing

Sew them on

once you are done with the top, lay it down flat with the right side facing up, take your lining and lay on top of it with the right side facing down. Pin in place if you like

Sew along the LONG sides with 1/4" seam allowance, to create a tube of fabric

Turn tube inside out, I like to use this tube turner thingy (sorry, i don't know what it is called :) )

I like to press the headband at this stage, but it depends on your material, if you used a thinner material you probably won't need to. If the side seams look a little bulky just press with a iron ON THE BACK LINING side so you don't melt your buttons or beads.

Topstitch / Sew Very close to the edge along both long sides. I like to use a zipper foot to get over any buttons that may be close to the edge. You can do this by hand with a thicker thread as well which would look great.

take your ends and push them into the tube about 1/4-1/2". Insert one end of your elastic and sew along edge, do the same for the other side of the headband with the other side of the elastic strip.

And your done! yay

now to make 10 more.......:)

We found these great vintage belt buckles and thought they would look great on our simple grey bubble dress, just the perfect touch for a classic dress

lastly, our urban weekender coat - pattern is coming soon (this one has been taking some time) it is the perfect unisex spring/fall jacket with a large cowl neck and zipper front, fully lined too!

Our New Smock Top dress was released today!

Perfect for the Summer, this pattern comes in sizes 12m-6t. The 'smocking' look comes from elastic sewn into casing along the top of the neckling (no shirring or elastic thread needed)
Can me made out of a variety of materials (light flowy fabrics work best for summer). you could also make this out of a light cord and wear it over a long sleeve shirt for fall and winter.

Fabric Shops We Love

We know all of you probably love fabric as much as we do, and we get tons of questions wanting to know where we get ours.

We do a lot of shopping around at warehouses here in Toronto and also love vintage shops for some great deals on different fabric. We may do a differnt post on the places we go around here, but for now, we will stick to the online world so everyone can this great stuff

we thought we would share some of our favorite online shops that we frequent because of the great selection and (the main reason) a great deal.

And if you love beautiful fabric, you will love it even more at a great price! :)

First off is Bertie's Closet . This is an great store for a great price on Japanese Fabrics, including Kokka and Echino. They are by far the best price we've found on echino fabrics, but if you see something you like, buy it right away. They seem to only have small amounts of fabric available, and too many times we have lost out on some fabric because we waited too long!

This Kokka mushroom fabric is only $9.95 a yard (how great is that!)

We Love this echino print, it would work great for boys and girls, and would make a super cute backpack for a little one.
Another thing is how fast they ship! We are in canada and got our order in 5 days! they are consistently the fastest shipping store we have dealt with. yay

Next is one of our ALL TIME favourites. This shop is the best place for high quality fabric at wholesale prices! Fitallwhofitin

Japanese Cotton at $5.50 a yard! what!??

How cute is the cherry print! at they are having a sale right now, a WHOLE BOLT for only $25!!! that's 15 yards of beautiful fabric, you could sew a whole wardrobe for your little one. We bought this stuff and was not disappointed, it was really high quality fabric

We made our winter wool coat with their fabric too!

Next is a great fabric shop with some really cute (can't find anywhere else) fabric. PattheCat , has the nicest fabric, and it's all her original design, so you can't get it any where else. Its on the pricier side, but well worth it in quality and cuteness!

Last is our go-to store for kwaii fabrics and Japanese linens. Most of you probably know about this shop, but we though we would share anyway KindSupplier . This place has the best price on some really cute fabric. We don't often gravitate towards really cutesy, but they have some really fab finds here

what a great show! we are finally back into pattern production after a great show at the milton fall craft show.
it was really fun to see everyone and we got some great feedback on our new designs

So we have been pretty busy here at heidiandfinn - sorry for the lack of new posts! :)

The Urban Kimono

a REALLY comfy and cute sweater that is super quick to make! a bit longer in length so it makes a great tunic and keeps their little tushes warm in cold months. it can be shortened to make are more traditional sweater the hits at the hip - both look super cute. And since there are no buttons, ties or snaps - it makes this a really great option for little ones that want to dress themselves, just pop over their head, or step into it!

we are also working on the bubble dress pattern, since we have had so many requests (we are glad you all like it so much 'cause we love it too! ), we will keep you posted on this one

What you have to do:

1. Have intermediate to advanced sewing experience (nothing against newbies and not that this is a hard pattern to sew, i just need people who have used a lot of patterns before and know what makes sense :)
2. Item to be finished in 1 Week or less of getting the pattern
3. Check pdf for spelling mistakes or pattern labeling mistakes, or any other mistakes (...there are probably a lot :) )
4. Provide a good Picture of the finished product, both of shirt on its own and in action on a little boy (Bonus **if it is a great picture and we use it on our website - you could get even more free patterns! yay)

....not too hard right?

what you need:

1 yard of lightweight to med. weight material for main shirt
1/4 yard of fusible interfacing
Various small scraps of fabric for the "military stripes" above pocket
5 or more matching buttons (depending on how many you use to close the front)
matching thread, sewing machine (obviously!)
optional - patches, embroidery work for embellishment for front or back

if you think you are up to being a tester - let me know by commenting below along with the size you would like to test and your contact info
i will email you the pdf file once all the testers have been chosen (you will recieve the pdf file with all the sizes although i will only need you to test the one size you are picked for)

The Hampton Hat is the essential modern little girls accessory! Fitted bucket-style that is fully lined and padded with fleece to give it a weighty and 'real hat' feel (not those thin cotton floppy hats)

Here is our newest pattern THE PINTUCK SWEATER TUNIC pattern and tutorial

this sweater features a bell shape bodice with slim sleeves and a wonderful chic pintuck front detail.

Wonderfully easy to sew (very fast) and simple for even the newest sewers

with a super comfy thick cowl neck that can be worn up or down - it will keep your child warm, cozy and super stylish

the back closes easliy with either a ribbon bow or button - your choice!

you can make this in whatever fabric you like (we like fleece or sweatshirt material for a really comfy feel) .

Studio Update

yes - we are still here - and working on lots of new patterns
thanks to everyone for the great ideas!
we are still in the middle of our move and won't be fully set up in our new studio until the end of january
We are planning to release a whole bunch of patterns then...so keep checking the store.

Also, since we have had overwhelming requests, starting in the spring we will also be launching a new store "heidiandfinn boutique" where we will exclusively sell finished clothing and accessories as well as offer custom orders!

New Stuff Coming

Stuff we have in the works

We are currently in the middle of a studio move - so our release of new pattern may take a little longer then usual :)
We have a few new patterns in the works and hope they can be released in the new year at the latest.
First we are working on the Uptown Jumper - a really cute an classic 'school girl' looking jumper with a dropped waistline and pleated skirt. It will also feature some cute details that will make it extra special and give it a more modern look.
Since we have had a HUGE amount of requests for more patterns that work for boys, we are working on a Modern Unisex Hoodie - this wont be the normal hoodie you find in the stores (you know the one with the middle zipper and the screen printed stuff on it). It will feature a asymmetrical button up front panel and clean lines. Perfect for any little kid with a bit more style :)
As always, we are still working on many boy patterns including a hooded vest and pocket cargo pants.
We would really love to hear from you about what you are looking for from boy patterns. ie. what styles, what can't you find in stores, what sizes etc.

we will also be looking for pattern testers for these as we don't have any little boys of our own to test them on. So if you have a little guy let us know if you would be interested

We just released our newest pattern for the CHIC COCKTAIL SWING COAT! it has been doing really well, so Thank You! This is a really versitle little swing coat that is super feminine and perfect for your little princess. It features a wider boat neckline that sits more on the shoulders for a new take on the classic swing coat. It also has a gorgeous bowtie closure in the front. This coat could also be made a bit more simple for everyday wear by swaping the bow out for a simple button. We are really excited about this pattern and hope you all enjoy making it as much as we did!
